Note the italicized statements: Romans 1:18-32 English Standard Version (ESV) God's Wrath on Unrighteousness 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. No one nails it down for us like the inspired apostle does here. Here is the sole explanation for what we are seeing in our world today. it was happening in Paul's time. It has increased in ours. Note that Paul says God's wrath "is" (present tense) revealed. His full wrath is yet to come, but already He gives up some people when they refuse Him as He expects people to receive Him, as set forth exclusively in Scripture. God makes no man sin. But when He, in righteous wrath, takes away His restraining hand, and leaves them to their depraved and corrupt hearts and inclinations, then there is nothing they will not stop at in terms of fulfilling the lusts of their hearts and minds. We need not worry, of course, for God is still on the throne. He is the sovereign ruler of heaven and earth, and still restrains evil considerably, lest His people be consumed in it. But He lets the reprobates go. All the while, they are digging their whole deeper, sinking further and further into a state of utter depravity. Indeed, as Paul later says, Rom. 2: 4-6, 4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 He will render to each one according to his works: Did you catch that? These people are literally "storing up wrath" with their every form of increasing depravity. God may in mercy save some, but anyone whom He leaves to themselves like Paul speaks of has had a bad day already, even if they do not know just how bad yet. Time will come when they will know. Rest assured of that. There is but one means to appease the wrath of God, whether one is a lost sinner among the Muslims, or other false religionists, or a sinner among the moral elite who nevertheless reject Jesus, who says He alone is the way, the truth and the life, apart from whom no man approaches in peace His Father, an infinitely holy and righteous God (John 14:6). On that day, the last one, when all shall stand before Him, He shall look for the righteousness of the Son He has sent to save. If one is not clothed by grace through faith in that Righteous robe of the Savior, as his only substitute, and cleansed from his sinfulness by the blood of the Lord Christ, it will be hell... literally... to pay.
