The big problem is that people don't want a "Holy War".
We are not in a "Holy War" with islam, but islam is in a "Holy War" with the rest of the world.
Until our leaders recognize this fact, we will never make any real progress in stopping it.
There are several important things to note on this, Herb.
Liberals, multiculturalists, moral relativists, etc., don't want a "holy war" with Islam, but they've got one despite their denials. These incredibly foolish dreamers and utopians for a Leftist "progressive" paradise were defeated before Islam came against them. They were never armed and ready for Islam's propoganda phase of warfare against them.
Now, some know deep down that if Islam's Sharia law were enacted they'd be in very big trouble. But they actually think they can coddle the "moderate" Muslims, and encourage them to "reform" their bellicose brethren who are terrorists. The liberals think they can handle things, and keep "extremism" from overtaking them and theirs.
But others are actually quite ignorant of what real, true-blue Islam is all about. Like everyone else they've been told that Islam is one of "the world's great monotheistic religions". And they fully assume that all religions are peaceful and benign.
This is at the root of a host of other ideologically fallacious notions the liberal relativists maintain. They fail to realize that Islam is a full-fledged ideological system that is totalitarian in nature. It demands sole allegiance unto itself in all spheres, political, social, religious... the whole nine yards. And Islam as taught in the Qur'an is manifestly intolerant of all other systems.
Relativists are so religiously illiterate that they imagine, they assume, they take it for granted, that all religions (to include Islam) all worship the same generic "God", that Islam is one of "many different paths to God". They figure that the islamic distinctives are basically harmless peculiarities.
They imagine that every religion has its version of "The Golden Rule", such as Christ teaches and such as is a chief doctrine in the Christian faith; namely
12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. ( Matthew 7:12; English Standard Version [ESV] )
Such ignorance is appalling. Truth be told, when America got a major wake up call in Nov. 4, 1979, when hostages were taken at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran (and there have been numerous Islamic hits against America and American interests long prior, as you know); I say, when that happened it was the duty of every leader in this nation to actually study the ideological basis for Islamic terrorism.
That basis is not far to seek at all. It is written in the Qur'an, and in the Hadith! The Muslims are doing what they are told to do in these sources which for them are authoritative. It has been going on since the 7th century. History screams at our leaders about Islamic totalitarianism, and there is no excuse for ignorance, especially on the part of our leaders!
And what a huge number of alarms have been sounded since 1979 against America and American interests abroad.
Yet these liberal fools in power don't get it!? The multiculturalists and the relativists of all stripes don't get it!?
Pardon me that I get stirred even as I write this. Believe me, I am actually using restraint.
But here is another side to these things, Herb. I submit that it lies at the very heart, the root, of this whole matter.
We have to ask how liberalism could ever take hold of people's minds and hearts in the first place, and lead (among so many other heinous and monstrous things) to the embrace of such notions as those I alluded to. Where does relativism, as opposed to Biblical absolutes, take its rise?
How is it that these folks will coddle an ideology that actually means to kill even them if it cannot bring them into submission at the end of the day, despite their embraces of it at present, and yet many of the same people will reject Christianity?
What accounts for this state of affairs?
The truth is that these people have been at war against the true and the living God since they left their mother's wombs. They've never been reconciled to God in Christ, and by the regenerating and sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, according to Holy Scripture. And this is, at bottom, why they are not at war with God's enemies or even their own sworn enemy, in this case Islam itself.
Indeed, the Bible clearly teaches that after the fall of our original parents in Eden, we all come into the world lost and undone, and against God, from the inner to the outermost parts of our being. Apart from God's saving and sanctifying grace, sin ruins the minds, the hearts, and the wills of men. Were it not for God's mercy and grace in Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit to transform hearts and minds and clear things up between us, God would have every right to kill us all. He owes us nothing. Salvation is by pure grace. And for those of us who are saved, we know to whom we owe the thanks and the praise. The Father planned it. The Son secured it with His blood. The Spirit applies it by His power.
But those who never become recipients of saving grace, who refuse God's love, mercy and grace in Christ... these people cannot think straight, no matter how great their academic achievements may be. Their hearts are corrupted, and they cannot love God. They cannot deny themselves, and take up the cross to follow Christ, for they are wholly motivated by self interests. Nevermind that that they are their own worst enemies, and that living according to the flesh brings death and a state of eternal (and fully conscious) damnation for them when they leave this world.
These fools cannot think straight, and lie to themselves.
How is it that some of the greatest intellectuals of all time are atheists or agnostics, or followers of all kinds of anti-Christian philosophy? How is it, for instance, that a number of "scientists" (though thankfully not all of them) are evolutionists, followers of Charles Darwin instead of followers of Christ? How is it that some of the most accomplished intellectuals from Harvard or MIT or Yale are such radical Left-Wing idealogues, who virtually spit fire and foam at the mouth should Christianity be proposed to them?
The Bible answers that question very clearly, especially in passages like Romans 1:18-32. "Professing themselves to be wise, they have become fools", says the inspired apostle, among other pointers in that passage.
They have great intellects, but they use their brains as weapons against almighty God.
They reject God, who is the one actual omniscient being in the whole universe; a God of infinite knowledge, wisdom, and understanding; a being in possession of all reason and rationality. God is the actual source of all these things, but because they reject Him, they cannot think straight. This would require them to also love the truth, which means loving God who is the source of truth.
But God is a holy God as well. He has but one way of reconciling unholy sinners to Himself, and that is through the Person and Work of His precious and beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. See John 14:6, but even the whole book of John, and the whole book of Romans, especially the first 8 chapters, which constitutes the most systematic arrangement of salvific Christian doctrine in the whole of the Bible.
The ideologues don't care for a God of holiness. And they don't want to accept God's one way, they are too enamored of their own wicked ways.
And that is the main reason why the liberal and leftist ideologues in our country hate and reject God and His Christ, and reject Christianity, while embracing these savages who follow the preeminent savage of them all, Muhammad... who is no "prophet" or "apostle", as claimed, but a 7th century warlord who was driven by demonic and carnal lusts, the brutality of which rivals those manifested by despots like Hitler and Stalin.
One reason, then, that the liberals and leftists in this country refuse to acknowledge the truth about Islam is that they have rejected the God of the Bible, the only true God.
People who do this... it should not surprise us that they are such fools in the face of the very clear and present danger of Islamic totalitarianism.

Only the truth sets men free, provided also they embrace the truth and love it, and love the God from whom the truth comes.
We who have embraced the truth, let us never deny it.
